Sri Lanka were 109-3 in their second innings chasing a target of 405 when rain brought an early close to the fourth day of the first Test in Dunedin.
Kusal Mendis made 46 and Dinesh Chandimal was not out 31.
New Zealand declared their second innings at 267-3 with Tom Latham unbeaten on 109.
Play ended nearly an hour early when the players were forced from the field for the third time because of rain.
Sri Lanka will require a further 296 runs and New Zealand need seven more wickets to win on the final day.
