UNB, Dhaka :
The High Court on Monday granted interim bail for one year to Barrister Fakhrul Islam, a lawyer of executed war crimes convict Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, in a case filed in connection with the leakage of the draft verdict on the BNP leader.
An HC bench comprising Justice Enayetur Rahim and Justice Amir Hossain passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the lawyer.
Advocate Joynul Abedin and Zahirul Islam Sumon stood for Barrister Fakhrul while deputy attorney general Sheikh AKM Moniruzzaman Kabir represented the state.
Emerging from the court, Advocate Joynul Abedin told reporters that there is
no legal bar to the release of the lawyer as there is no other case against him. On the other hand, Moniruzzaman Kabir said they will file an appeal with the Appellate Division against the HC order.
On November 30 last year, a Cyber Crime Tribunal rejected the bail pleas of Barrister Fakhrul in the case. Later, he filed an appeal with the High Court against the tribunal order.
On November 20, 2013, plain-clothes police arrested Barrister Fakhrul Islam from the city’s Segunbagicha area in connection with the leakage of the draft verdict.
On October 1, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury to death for committing crimes against humanity, including genocide, during the 1971 Liberation War.
