A constant threat posed by cattle thieves has spurred the creation of a device – a door lock – that knocks on the owner’s mobile phone in the event of a break-in.
The innovation has proved yet again that necessity is, after all, is the mother of invention!
Ibrahim Ali of Natore’s Lalpur Upazila, a farmer’s son, was tired of worrying about his cow.
The ‘mobile-based door lock system’ was put together with locally available technology, said the young inventor. He gave a
demonstration on the working of his device during a recent visit to bdnews24.com’s Chittagong office. The lock opens only on getting a call from specific mobile phone numbers. It sends an alert to the homeowner if anyone else tries to get in.
“I was thinking of ways to protect ourselves from thieves abounding in our area. So I ended up making this,” said Ali. Five phone numbers and a ‘master phone number’ can be set inside the device, which is programmed to send a signal to the master number every time anyone tries open the door with other numbers.
“It won’t lock if the door is already open. The master phone will be alerted if someone tries to break the lock.
There’s a manual key in case the lock fails to work because of technical faults.”
Ali, who also made irrigation pumps, cranes and bulldozers for his own use, said he had been sent off to a madrasa instead of a school like many children from poor families.
