Speedboat tragedy Owners, driver among 4 sued

Police filed a case with Shibchar police station in Madaripur district on Tuesday accusing four people for the speedboat tragedy in the River Padma.
On Monday morning, at least 26 people were killed and five others injured when a passenger-carrying speedboat crashed into an anchored sand-laden bulkhead near Banglabazar ferry terminal under Shibchar upazila in Madaripur in the River Padma.
“The case was lodged at about 12:30am on Tuesday accusing the speedboat driver Shah Alam, owners Chandu Mollah and Rezaul and the speedboat jetty leaseholder Shah Alam Khan,” said Ram Proshad Chakraborty, duty officer of Shibchar police station.He said that Kanthalbari river police outpost’s sub-inspector Lokman Hossain lodged the case.
Shibchar police inspector (investigation) said that they had detained the speedboat driver who was also injured seriously in the accident on Monday afternoon.
The driver, Shah Alam, was shifted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital from Shibchar Upazila Health Complex early Tuesday as his condition deteriorated, police said.
