Special Lecture on aging population held at DU

A special lecture on “Declining Birthrate, Aging Population and the Japanese Society” organized by Japan Study Center of Dhaka University (DU) was held on Monday at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of the university.
Professor of Atomy University of Japan Dr. Kiyoshi Kasahara delivered the lecture.
Japanese Ambassador in Dhaka Masato Watanabe addressed it as the chief guest with Director of Japan Study Center of DU Prof Abul Barkat in the chair.
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) of Dhaka University Prof Nasreen Ahmad and Director of Southeast Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan Takashi Ariyoshi addressed the function as special guests.
Prof Nasreen Ahmad stressed the need for strengthening relationships among the family members to look after the aging people.
She urged all to utilize wisdom and experiences of aging people for socio- economic development of the country.
Masato Watanabe in his speech said Bangladesh and Japan are working together to promote education and culture of each other. Japan Study Center of DU has been playing an important role in this regard, he added.
Professor Kiyoshi Kasahara in his special lecture said 25 percent of total population of Japan is older.
“They live alone at the old age. They do not enjoy support and cooperation from their families. The relationship among the family members has been declining since World War II due to economic development in Japan,” he pointed out.
