Speaker seeks global support for Rohingya repatriation

Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has sought support of the international community for voluntary, safe, peaceful and sustainable repatriation of the Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar.
She sought the support while addressing an international conference on the “Rohingya’s situation in Myanmar and Bangladesh” as the main speaker at the National Assembly in the French capital of Paris, according an official press release issued here on Saturday.
France-Bangladesh Friendship Group organized the conference on Friday with France-Gambia Friendship Group President Jean Francois Mbaye in the chair, the release said.
“Bangladesh has set a unique example of humanity sheltering the Rohingyas while Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina opened a new door of humanity through opening the border for the Rohingyas,” Shirin Sharmin said.
Now Bangladesh wants to repatriate the Rohingyas with the help of the international community and by holding bilateral discussions, she added.
Bangladesh is continuing discussions with Myanmar for repatriating the Rohingyas, the Speaker said, expressing the hope that Myanmar will complete the safe and peaceful repatriation process showing respect to the deal signed between the two countries.
She thanked France-Bangladesh Friendship Group (FBFG) for organizing the conference on the Rohingyas.
Noted international researchers, lawyers, critics and parliament members joined the conference.
FBFG President Daniel OBONO and renowned Human Rights Researchers Dr Maung Zarni, Human Rights activists Rajiya Sultana and Tun Khin, lawyers on Rohingya Affairs Nurul Islam and Nay San Lwin, Professor C Abrar and Professor Yousuf Balsi addressed the conference, among others.
