Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker and Commonwealth Parliamentary Association’s Executive Committee Chairperson Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Monday called for giving proper recognition to women’s contribution to the agriculture sector.
“Though women have been playing the most important role in the agriculture sector, they have no proper recognition,” she told a delegation of experts of “Food Security and Nutrition” programme under the World Food Programme (WFP) at her JS Secretariat office here.
UK University of Ulster Prof SR Osmani led the delegation while WFP Country Director in Dhaka Christa Rader was also present on the occasion.
About Bangladesh’s progress in food production, the JS speaker said the country has attained repute of a food-exporting nation which used to face food deficit.
“Bangladesh has made a revolution in food production. Progress has been achieved in vegetable and potato production side by side with rice and wheat output,” Dr Sharmin Chaudhury said.
She said the government has ensured food supply for all strata of people as the demand for food for the poor and destitute are being met through Vulnerable Group Development (VGD) and Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programmes.
The progress has been achieved as the government has been providing power supply to irrigation on priority basis, ensuring fertilizers at fair prices for farmers and making different agriculture inputs easily available, the JS speaker said.
The WFP delegation praised the country’s development activities and suggested to meet the demand for proper nutrition side by side with ensuring food security.
