Xinhua, Madrid :
Spain has the most competitive tourism industry in the world especially thanks to its cultural resources, infrastructure and adaptation to new technologies, according to a report issued by the World Economic Forum.
Spain has come out on top of a list of 141 countries for the first time, according to the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2015.
It was followed by France, Germany, the United States, Britain, and Switzerland that was first in the previous edition when Spain ranked fourth.
The report analyzes 90 indicators such as cultural and natural resources, health and hygiene conditions, security levels, price competitiveness, adaptation to new technologies and infrastructure.
Spain had an overall score of 5.31 points out of seven. “With beautiful heritage sites throughout the country, it boasts top marks for its cultural resources, and also scores highly for business travelers with a significant number of international conferences,” the report said.
The report also warned that “there is room for improvement” and pointed out that the labor market is still rigid, there is an inefficient legal framework regarding construction permits and a “mismatch between workers’ rewards and productivity.”
Spain is the third most visited country in the world. It received a record high of 64.99 million international tourists in 2014.
