History:
Southern University Bangladesh originated from the establishment of Institute of Management and Information Technology (IMIT) in 1998 as an affiliated higher educational center of USA and UK Universities.
 After successful operation of IMIT for a number of years, the promoters of IMIT namely Mr. Sarwar Jahan and Mrs. Ishrat Jahan conceived the idea of establishing a private University at Chittagong to cater to the increasing higher educational needs of this port city. A team was formed to prepare a project profile for setting up a private University under the Private University Act of 1992. The team performed their job properly and the project profile was submitted to the UGC under the sponsorship of A.J. Foundation in 2002.
 On the recommendation of UGC, the Government of Bangladesh accorded approval to this private University on 26 November,2002 under the name “Southern University Bangladesh”. The university started its academic activities on 14 January, 2003 through the approval of its academic programs by the Government of Bangladesh. The University is presently administered by Southern University Foundation.
Vision Statement: The vision of Southern University Bangladesh is to develop the University as a leading academic institution capable of providing internationally recognized high-quality educational programs at the tertiary level and offering modern research facilities conducive to the creation of new knowledge & technology. The University intends to create a stimulating and congenial environment for the faculty members, students and administrative staff to work in an interactive manner for the professional development of the graduates. The University would like to see its products as the efficient, knowledgeable and ideal human capital of the nation.
Mission Statement: Southern University Bangladesh recognizes as its mission to work systematically for the development of globally competitive and morally-sound human resource by offering high-quality tertiary-level educational programs in a congenial academic environment. It is committed to attaining academic excellence in all facets of its higher education, research and training programs to help develop the inherent potentialities of the learners fully and thereby make them high quality & worthy professionals capable of working at the national & international level. It intends to provide all-out support to the students for enabling them to attain their career goals smoothly.
Southern University Bangladesh- An Overview: Southern University Bangladesh is located at the port city of Chittagong on the South-eastern part of Bangladesh. It offers higher educational programs in eight academic disciplines including Business Administration, Computer Science & IT, Law, English, Pharmacy, Electronic & Communication Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Civil Engineering under three separate faculties namely Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Science and Engineering and Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Science. In all the eight academic disciplines, undergraduate programs have been carefully designed in keeping with the needs of job market at home & abroad. Efforts have been made to enhance the practical orientation of the courses so that effective products can be developed. Master’s programs are being offered by the Department of Business Administration , Computer Science & IT , Law, English and Pharmacy to develop up-to-date knowledge base, technical skills and high-level of analytical & decision making skills among the graduates. These programs develop the student’s knowledge of the theory and practice and an understanding of the codes of professional responsibility. Interactive teaching methods, case study, internship and research project assignments are employed to develop the graduates properly in keeping with the demand of time.

Profile of Prof. Mohammad Ali, VC , Southern University
Prof Mohammad Ali (Oxon), Vice-Chancellor of Southern University Bangladesh. He was born on 1st December 1934 in Chittagong. Educated at the Universities of Dhaka and Oxford. Professor of English at the University of Chittagong 1972-95, also taught at the University of Rajshahi 1958-66. Commonwealth academic Staff Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, 1975-76. Visited USA 1975 at the invitation of the US government. Participated in the International Seminar on Stylistics held in 1974 at Osmania University India. Also represented Bangladesh at UESCO conference in Geneva in 1977. Appointed Vice-Chancellor of Chittagong University, April, 1985. The same year in November addressed the 40th anniversary session of UN General Assembly as a member of Bangladesh Delegation. Made a full-time Member of University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC) in 1990. Essayist and Translator. Edited with others anthologies of English verse, and of prose. Edited with others Bengali-English Dictionary published by Bangla Academy, 1994.
