With reports doing the rounds that Sourav Ganguly is gunning for the job of coaching the Indian cricket team, sources close to CNN-IBN reveal that the former Indian captain has denied any such reports.
Ganguly made it clear that he wants to focus on cricket administration and is not keen on coaching India right now.
Another name doing the rounds is Rahul Dravid but the cricketer couldn’t be reached for his views.
Earlier, according to a report in The Indian Express, a Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) insider has revealed that the former India captain has put in an informal word to the new BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya about his interest to replace Duncan Fletcher, whose tenure as India coach ended after the World Cup.
“Sourav’s achievements as a cricketer and his tactical acumen present a strong case. But he has to apply for the job,” the source told the newspaper. “They (Ganguly and Dalmiya) had a discussion but Dalmiya didn’t give him any assurance,” he said.
Interestingly, the CAB insider also revealed that some sections of the BCCI also want Rahul Dravid to join the race. “Dravid is a hugely respected figure and is doing a great job as Rajasthan Royals mentor/coach. We want someone to take this young team forward.
Dravid would be a top candidate, but like Ganguly, he, too, has to apply for the job if he’s interested,” he said.
The BCCI working committee meeting likely to be held on April 25 and the hunt for the new coach is still on. Sources reveal that if any one of them is interested then the only way of considering their names would be, after they file an application for the post.
