Sound pollution a growing hazard to public health

Although sound is one of the vital communication media for human civilization, its pollution causes multifarious physical and mental disorders to public health.
Utmost emphasis should be given on creating mass-awareness side by side with full-length enforcement of the existing laws to protect public health from the adverse effects of sound pollution.
The views were expressed at a daylong training workshop related to creating awareness among the public in general especially for the transport drivers and labourers at the conference hall of Rajshahi Teachers Training College on Saturday, reports BSS.
The Department of Environment (DoE) organized the workshop in association with its Integrated and Partnership in Controlling Sound Pollution Project.
Commissioner of Rajshahi division Dr Humayun Kabir addressed the workshop as chief guest with Deputy Commissioner Abdul Jalil in the chair.
DoE Additional Director General Humayun Kabir, Principal of Rajshahi Medical College Prof Nawshad Ali, Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Abu Kalam Siddique and Chief Executive Officer of Rajshahi City Corporation Dr Sharif Uddin also spoke.
The meeting was told that sound pollution is the main reason behind 30 major diseases in the human body and around five percent of the population is affected physically and mentally by the pollution.
Dr Humayun Kabir said many people suffer a lot due to sound pollution. So, all the authorities and individuals concerned should come forward and work together to reduce sound pollution.
He said the existing laws related to controlling sound pollution should be enforced and the drivers should drive their vehicles abiding by the law to check sound pollution for the greater interest of public health.
