UNB, Dhaka :
Swashbuckling southpaw national opening batsman Soumya Sarkar has been out of form since the money-spinning tournament of Bangladesh- Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and is yet to regain his grip in the ongoing Dhaka Premier Division League (DPL).
The 22-year-old batsman is playing for Legends of Rupganj in the ongoing DPL. So far, he has played seven matches in the domestic league, and scored less than 25 runs in the six matches, while hit 84 runs in the rest one.
Soumya was unable to show his true colours in the World T20 in India as well. And later he was pushed down to the middle order in the last two matches. He scored his last ton during the four-day Bangladesh Cricket League match on May 24, 2015.
BCB’s national manager of Game Development Nazmul Abedin Fahim has shared a few words about Soumya’s off-form and said: “No doubt Soumya has got the talent. But he’s still young and I think he’s facing shortage of knowledge or experience regarding what a batsman needs to do when going through tough times.”
Nazmul said he thinks Soumya is trying to do many things and often changes his approach to run away from the problem. “But, in my opinion, it will not help him, rather deepen his problem,” the national manager of Game Development said.
The southpaw’s off-form also giving a headache to the BCB officials whom to chose for the dashing opener Tamim Iqbal’s opening partner in the upcoming matches.
Coach Salahuddin said Soumya is facing some technical problems with his batting and he should overcome it as early as possible.
“Everybody knows that Soumya is not comfortable with off-spin in the domestic arena so sooner or later it will be an open secret in the international arena. Now it’s all up to him how he’ll overcome his bad patch,” he added.
Well in this case, Imtiaz Hossain could be the right replacement of Soumya Sarkar in the national team, he said adding that the 31-year-old batsman is currently playing for Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club in Dhaka Premier League (DPL).
Imtiaz is the highest run scorer in the ongoing DPL with an envious batting average of 70. He has scored 490 runs in 8 matches.
He hit two tons and three fifties in Dhaka’s most prestigious 50-over tournament. He would be a better option in lieu of off-form Soumya. During a media interview, Imtiaz said: “I played good cricket back 2008-09 season and got the chance in the BCB Academy team. But unfortunately, I broke my finger and ruled out of cricket for a long time.”
Asked about his willingness to play in the national team, he said: ‘Yes, I’m performing well in the ongoing DPL. Now it’s all up to BCB selectors whether they will choose me or not.”
