UNB, Narayanganj :
In a barbaric incident that rekindled the medieval age, a nine-month-old baby girl has been burnt to death allegedly by her father at Pakunda village in Sonargaon upazila.
Jannatul, daughter of Jahirul Islam of the village, succumbed to her injuries early Friday, five days after her father set her on fire by pouring petrol on her body.
Victim’s maternal grandmother Sazia Begum filed a case with Sonargaon Police Station against three people, including Jahirul, said officer-in-charge of the police station Morshed Alam.
According to the case statement, Jahirul, an electric mechanic, married Kulsum, daughter of Abdul Malek of Comilla district, on November 2015. The couple was blessed with a baby girl, Jannatul.
However, the birth of the girl infuriated Jahirul instead of making him happy as he wanted a baby boy, leading to a dispute between the husband and wife.
Following an altercation over the issue, Jahirul poured petrol on his minor daughter around 11 pm on July 30 and set her afire.
Noticing the incident, Kulsum rushed in and managed to put down the blaze. However, this left the minor girl severely injured.
As Jannatul was being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the capital for treatment, Jahirul took back her home for providing herbal treatment. However, she succumbed to her burn injuries around 2 am yesterday.
On information, sub-inspector Sheikh Mafizul Islam of Sonargaon Police Station went to the spot and sent the body to Narayanganj General Hospital Morgue for autopsy.
