Rajshahi Correspondent :
Newly commissioned solar energy-based irrigation pumps have opened up a new door in agriculture sector as farmers can boost their farming yields through the irrigation facilities round the year in Barind area.
In addition to benefiting the farmers economically, the pumps will contribute to reduce the gradually increasing pressure on power supply.
Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) has set up two low lift pumps adjacent to Sarmangla canal at Jagpur and Birail areas and another two pumps near ponds in Gopalpur and Paldevpur areas under Godagari Upazila by spending around Taka one crore.
After lifting water from the canal and ponds the pumps will irrigate farming fields. The solar system pumps have capacity to provide irrigation to more than 2,000 bighas of cropping fields round the year.
Around 10 solar panels will be installed to operate the pumps for irrigation under a three-year project titled “Extension of Irrigation in Barind Area through Conservation of Water in Canal” being implemented in eight upazilas of Rajshahi, Naogaon and Chapainawabgonj districts.
Project Director Engineer Shamsul Huda told The New Nation that the project has been adopted to enhance crop production through using the solar irrigation pump in the dried area.
Each of the 24-piece solar modules contains integrated energy of 720 volt having five horse powers along with water discharging power of 300 liter per hour. Lifespan of the system has been set to 20 years.
Engineer Huda said the power produced through fossil fuel is carbon contaminated and that always pollute environment. Besides, its production cost is high.
However, the solar system power generation is a new idea, which is renewable, less production cost and carbon-free. As a whole, the solar system has a significant contribution towards lessening the pressure on the gradually increasing power demands.
