Saifur Rahman Sohag and Jakir Hossain have been elected president and general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).
Sohag bagged 2,690
votes while Zakir got 2,675 votes out of the total 2,819 votes casted in its 28th council held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.
Chief Election Commissioner and former BCL Vice-President Sumon Kundu announced the result.
A total of 40 candidates ran for the two posts while 213 candidates withdrawn nomination paper during the election period. The voting started at 11:30 and ended at 5:00pm. Out of 3,138 council voters, 2,819 voters cast their votes while 319 voters were absent. 89.83 percent votes were casted.
Sumon Kundo, Mostafizur Rahman Mostak and Sheikh Rasel were the election commissioner and President HM Bodiuzzaman Shohag and general secretary Siddique Nazmul Alam monitored the whole election process.
AL leaders Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Khalid Mohmud Chowdhury, former BCL secretary Nazrul Islam Babu supervised the election.
Saifur Rahman Sohag told The New Nation, “I will follow the path of Bangabandhu for leading the organisation”. He also wished to practice idealistic moods of politics.
The newly elected Secretary General Jakir Hossain expressed gratefulness to prime minister Sheikh Hasian and vowed to work for implementing the dream of Sheikh Hasina.
Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday inaugurated the first session of two-day long BCL 28th council at Shuwardy Udyan while prime urged the leaders and workers of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) to choose regular and meritorious students for leadership.
