Speakers at a discussion have said the physically challenged people need financial and social support for their proper rehabilitation and family integration.
They viewed collective effort of both the public and private sector financial institutions have become an urgent need for economic emancipation together with fundamental rights for their social dignity.
Terming the challenged people as the integral part of the society they put emphasis on mainstreaming them through creating a disabled-friendly atmosphere.
The observations came at a view-sharing meeting styled “Role of financial institutions in development of the people with disabilities” held at Safawang Chinese Restaurant in Rajshahi City on Wednesday.
Pratibandhi Swanibhar Sangstha (PSS) organized the programme discussing ways and means of how to create income generation opportunities with financial supports of financial institutions.
General Manager of Bangladesh Bank Nazim Uddin addressed the discussion as chief guest with PSS Adviser and Senior Banker of Janata Bank Limited Dr Syed Mosharraf Hossain in the chair.
Deputy General Manager of Sonali Bank Limited Subal Chandra Mondal, Deputy General Manager of Janata Bank Limited Mukhlesur Rahman and Deputy General Manager of Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank Abdul Washeque spoke as special guests. President of Rajshahi Union of Journalists Akbarul Hassan Millat moderated the discussion.
President of PSS Shafiqul Islam and President of District Badhan Protibandhi Sangstha Sohel Rana welcomed the participants while PSS Organizing Secretary Ashraf Habib Siddiqui presented a concept paper on the topic.
The senior bankers urged the people with disabilities to avail the existing credit opportunities of different banks for their income generations as the banks are ready to provide the credit supports.
They stressed the need for establishing a sound and friendly environment for the challenged people and laid emphasis on inclusion of them in the mainstream of development with the aim of ensuring them a normal life.
Chief Guest Nazim Uddin emphasized the need for a collective effort for welfare of the people with disability to ensure a dignified position for them in the society.
Moreover, the surrounding mindset towards the challenged people should be changed as it’s adjudged as one of the major problems than that of the disability, he added.
