Safe School for Girls Campaign launched: Social movement to stop child marriage stressed

Public representatives and development activists at a brief pre-rally discussion here observed that waging social movement alongside creating mass-awareness has become an urgent need to halt child marriage.
To this end, all concerned including teachers, parents, religious leaders and members of school managing committee should put in their level best efforts.
The collective efforts will supplement the national work plan 2013-2025 for combating violence against women and children and achieving the sustainable development goals- 2030, they added.
The Hunger Project Bangladesh (THPB) organized the-rally at Vaya Luxmipur Union Parishad area under Charghat Upazila in the district in association with Her Choice Programme and Safe School for Girls Campaign on Thursday.
Union Parishad Chairman Shawkat Ali Bulbul, Headmaster of Raipur High School Sazder Ali, Headmaster of Pannapara High School Rabiul Alam, Headmaster of Bankishore High School Manjurul Islam, Managing Committee President of Budirhat High School Shahabul Islam, UP members Moina Khatun and Hawa Begum and Area Coordinator of THPB Subrata Kumar Paul spoke on the occasion.
They mentioned that adequate support from the community including the public representatives is very effective to ensure safe school for girls students that could be the vital means of transforming them into worthy citizens.
Ensuring safe schools for the girls through combating all sorts of violence especially sexual harassment against them is a very vital for boosting skilled human resources coupled with women empowerment.
Child marriage restricts girls’ rights to education, rights to mobility and rights to freedom. So, the social ill must be resisted through forging social movement.
Gender-sensitive social mindset can help establishing rights of the adolescents through reducing violence and repression against them.
“We need to establish social networks and alliances involving government and non-government organisations, community people, civil society and media to reach the cherished goal,” said UP Chairman Shawkat Bulbul.
More than 1000 students from four schools along with public representatives and others concerned passed through localities with a big rally carrying banners disseminating various messages on demerits of child marriage.
BSS from Khulna adds: Over 500 adolescents, mostly girls, from different adolescent clubs and secondary schools in Dacope upazila of Khulna said ‘no’ to child marriage.
The teenagers also vowed to create awareness against child marriage in an adolescent gathering observing the World Menstrual Hygiene Day on Thursday.
Dacope Upazila Adolescent Groups in association with ‘Accelerating Action Towards Ending Child Marriage (AECM) project and Dacope Upazila Administration organised the event at the hall room of Dacope UNO office.
Chairman of Dacope Upazila Parishad Sheikh Abul Hossain addressed the gathering as the chief guest with Dacope UNO Maruful Alam in the chair.
Vice-Chairman of Upazila Parishad Advocate Suvodra Sarkar, Secondary Education Officer Sohel Hossain, Team leader of AECM Project of CARE Abdul Matin Sharder, teacher of Pankhali Momtaz Begum Secondary School Mohitur Rahman Sheikh, NGO personnel Banani Das Gupta, addressed the event as special guests.
Assistant Commissioner (land) Parveen Sultana delivered the welcome speech. Teachers and parents of the adolescents, civil society members, public representatives, government officials and representatives of different professional organisations also attended the gathering. Chief guest Sheikh Abul Hossain conducted the oath taking function.
Speakers at the gathering said collective efforts had become indispensable to increase the number of school-going girls which would help to stop child marriage in the society.
At the programme, the adolescents shared their achievements in changing social norms and engaging civil society member in their fight against child marriage.
They also urged authorities concerned to accelerate the equal access of women and girls to education and healthcare services.
About menstrual period, parents and guardians called upon adolescent girls to use clean clothes or hygiene pad, take healthy foods and build awareness to ensure sound health.
Earlier, the adolescents brought out a colourful procession with banners and festoons from the upazila parishad office premises.
BSS from Rangpur adds: Speakers at a meeting laid stress on the need for comprehensive efforts of all concerned to put an end child marriage.
“Child marriage shatters life and hinders education of the children,” they opined.
Government officials and development activists expressed the view at an opinion-sharing meeting organised by the district administration at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner in the city on Thursday afternoon.
The Girls’ Advocacy Alliance Project, LAMB and Plan International Bangladesh (PAB) extended assistance in arranging the meeting moderated by Divisional Coordinator of LAMB Rehana Begum.
With Deputy Director of the Department of Social Services (DSS) Abdur Razzaque in the chair, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Ruhul Amin Mian attended the meeting as the chief guest.
Divisional Manager of PAB Abdul Kuddus, District Women Affairs Officer Kawser Pervin and General Secretary of Rangpur Press Club Ali Asharf addressed as special guests.
Programme Manager of LAMB Bapon Mankin delivered the welcome speech in the meeting narrating the negative impacts of child marriage and the way-outs to eradicate the chronic social curse.
