Outstation Soccer Club, Feni made their first-ever final berth in any major football tournament of the country eliminating three-time Federation Cup champions Brothers Union Club by 2-0 goals in the first semifinal of the Modhumati Bank Independence Cup Football on Tuesday.
After a barren first half, Soccer Club, Feni scored two quick goals within three minutes shocking once Dhaka giant Brothers Union Club in an almost crowd-less Bangabandhu National Stadium in the evening.
Gambian booter Mathew Mendy and substitute Abdullah Al Mamun scored one goal in each – in the 81st and 84th minutes – for the six-time Feni football league champions Soccer Club.
Feni Soccer Club, eliminated from semifinal of the Federation Cup Football in 2009 losing to Dhaka Mohammedan SC by 0-3 goals, will play the final on Saturday (Apr 12) against the winners of arch rivals Abahani Limited and Mohammedan SC who meet Wednesday.
In the day’s match, Brothers Union had an opportunity to move ahead, but their Nigerian forward Simon’s shot, on a through pass of midfielder Jewel Rana, deflected off a Soccer defender and sailed harmlessly over the crossbar in the 11th minute.
Soccer Club also came close to score in the 36th minute. Defender Ramjan Ali Mollah curved a corner in the middle of the box, which was received by Gambian defender Landing Darboe and his placing shot at goal was saved by Brothers defender Yousuf Ali Khan from the goal-line.
Goalkeeper Mohammad Nehal saved the Soccer Club from a certain goal in the 57th minute as he dived to his right to foil an angular shot by Brothers’ Nigerian forward Simon from the box.
Gambian midfielder Mathew Mendy of Soccer Club broke the deadlock in the 81st minute with a header, utilizing a side volley of Gambian forward Kabba Jobe. (1-0)
Substitute defender Abdullah Al-Mamun sealed the fate of the match scoring the 2nd goal for Soccer Club in the 85th minute.
Gambian midfielder Chuka Charles’ shot took a deflection off the defense wall and landed in front of Abdullah Al Mamum whose first shot was blocked by Brothers goalie, but Mamun succeeded in his second attempt to slot the ball into the net (2-0)
Feni Soccer Club earlier reached the semifinal dethroning holders Sheikh Russell KC in penalty shootout while Brothers Union booked a seat for the semis beating Team BJMC 2-1 in the quarterfinals
