Smuggling of timbers from the forest areas in Chittagong is rampant now. The timber smugglers are cutting the trees and smuggling the timbers illegally from Chittagong to other districts of the country.
Meanwhile, the Forest Department has started special raids against the timber smugglers. Following the special measure, the teams recovered huge smuggled timbers in last one month.
The Forest Department seized huge timbers worth around taka 12 lakh loaded in two trucks from Beparipara at Agrabad area in the port city and Naryan Hat under Fatikchari upazila in Chittagong.
Rejaul Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Mobile Team of Forest Department, Chittagong North Range led the separate raids at Beparipara at Agrabad area in the port city and Naryan Hat under Fatikchari upazila in Chittagong at early previous morning and Thursday night.
Sources said the timber smugglers were smuggling the timbers from the nearby forest illegally by a truck (Number Chatra Metro- Ta- 11- 5403). Acting on secret information, the officials of the Forest Department seized 250cft timbers loaded in a truck from Beparipara in Agrabad area in the morning. Worth of the recovered timber may be around taka 12 lakh, said the Range Officer of Forest Department Mohammed Ariful Islam.
Earlier, in another raid, the officials of the Forest Department seized 250cft timbers loaded in a truck (Number Chatra Metro- Da- 11- 1553) from Naryan Hat under Fatikchari upazila. The recovered timber is worth around taka 10 lakh. ANM Abdul Wadud, DFO of the Forest Department, Chittagong North range said, “We have seized huge smuggled timbers in last one month. We recovered timbers worth around taka more than half crore in last two weeks.”
Wadud said, “The Forest Department, Chittagong North range is trying to control the smuggling of timbers. The department has been conducting special raids in this regard in recent days. The special measure against the timber smuggling will be continued until further order.”
Earlier, on Match 19 last, Forest Department seized huge timbers worth around taka 15 lakh loaded in a covered van from Foujdarhat Check Station area under Sitakunda upazila.
Range Officer of Forest Department Mohammed Ariful Islam said, the timber smugglers were smuggling the timbers from the nearby forest illegally by a covered van (Number Dhaka Metro- Ta- 11- 7879). Acting on secret information, the officials of the Forest Department seized 500cft timbers.
Besides, earlier on March 8 last, the Forest Department seized 600cft timbers loaded in a truck from Korer Hat area under Mirerswari upazila. Forest Department seized 200cft timbers loaded in a truck from Korer Hat area under Mirerswari upazila in Chittagong on March 7 last.
It may be mentioned that earlier on February 28 last, Forest Department seized 500cft timbers loaded in a truck from Bhujpur under Fatikchari upazila in Chittagong.
