The SME Foundation has finally started an initiative to create a database of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), aiming to provide hassle-free services to the entrepreneurs and ensure overall development of the sector.
In this regard, the Foundation, in cooperation with the Access to Information (a2i) under Prime Minister’s Office, on Thursday launched a pilot programme named ‘SME E-database’.
Initially, the project will be run at four places in four districts across the country – Shyampur in Dhaka, Admadighi in Bogura, Nesarabad in Pirojpur and Bairab in Kishoreganj. While launching the programme as the chief guest, Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun said the SME Foundation’s initiative for creating the database would help contribute significantly to the country’s economy.
State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak was present at the event as a special guest.
Mentioning that the joint initiative a ‘realistic and time-befitting’ one, Mr Palak said it would help the government take ‘policy decision’ about cottage, micro, small and medium enterprises (CMSMEs) sector.
The government has set a target to increase the SME sector’s contribution to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) to 32 per cent from the existing 25 per cent by 2024.
The sector controls around 70 per cent of the country’s economy, providing 80-85 per cent industrial employment and supplying the demand of 30-35 per cent industrial products to the consumers.
SME Foundation Chairperson Prof Dr Md Masudur Rahman presided over the event, while its Managing Director Dr Md Mofizur Rahman delivered the welcome speech.
Director of a2i project Dr Dewan Md Humayun Kabir was also present at the event.
