The Second South Asian Countries SME (small and medium enterprise) Forum Conference 2016 will begin at city’s Hotel 71 from Thursday with a view to facilitating the SME entrepreneurs across the country.
Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu will inaugurate the conference while South Asian Countries SME Forum and NASCIB President Mirza Nurul Gani Shovon will be the chair.
Dr. Momtaz Uddin Ahmed, Professor of Economics, University of Dhaka will present the keynote in the conference. Former FBCCI President Kazi Akramuddin Ahmed, Industry Secretary Md. Mosharaf Hossain Bhuiyan, Principal Secretary of Micro and Small Scale Enterprises and Textile, West Bengal, Rajiva Sinha and SME Foundation Managing Director Md. Shafiqul Islam will present as the special guests.
A total of 300 member-delegates from eight countries participated in the conference. SME entrepreneurs from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Srilanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldip and Afghanistan will took part the conference.
The National Association of Small and Cottage Industries of Bangladesh (NASCIB) and South Asian Countries SME Forum in association of Bangladesh Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) and Industry Ministry will organise the conference.
South Asian Countries SME Forum will be awarded 15 business leaders and entrepreneurs for their contribution in enhancing economy.
South Asian Countries SME Forum and NASCIB President Mirza Nurul Gani Shovon on Monday told The New Nation that the aim of the conference is to enhance trade, commerce, investment, technical and economic cooperation among member countries.
According to the traders, the trade volume between Bangladesh and other South Asian nations is only 5 percent of total international trade. And behind this, there is no major trade barrier such as tariff or anything. It’s a psychological barrier.
The governments of South Asian countries, especially India, should consider efforts to open up ways of more human mobility across the neighbouring nations, they said.
“The role of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is vital for overall economic growth of any country. SME development can reduce the economic disparity from the society, and that is why, we are sincerely working for promoting the sector”, said NASCIB President.
Access to finance and market are the major problems for the SME entrepreneurs. NASCIB and South Asian Countries SME Forum are sincerely working in this regard.
The proper nursing and development of SMEs with upholding rural empowerment would help boost income opportunities, strengthen household security, improve living standard and reduce the risk of unemployment issues, pointed Mirza Nurul Gani Shovon.
Referring to the role of SMEs in poverty alleviation and rural development to ensure speedy implementation of the SME development in Bangladesh, the business leader said easy loan facilities for the SME entrepreneurs is crucial, so that they can create enterprises for exploring more jobs and empowerment eying to eradicate poverty.
Talking about the upcoming conference, the South Asian Countries SME Forum President said that the conference is a platform to share the knowledge and experience among the SME entrepreneurs of the SAARC region.
Already, the National Small Industries Corporation Ltd (NSIC) of India has expressed interest to work jointly with the SME Foundation for the integrated development of SME sectors in Bangladesh, especially in the industrial fields, informed the business leader.
Considering the necessity of skilled manpower in promoting country’s economy, the business leader said that NASCIB is providing workshop and training programme for the SME entrepreneurs of various sector.
