Joynal Abedin Khan :Intern doctors and staff of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital (SSMCH) on Saturday blocked the city’s Mirpur Road in front of the institution for an hour demanding return of intern doctor Shamim Tapu Khan.They also organized a protest rally on the Azimpur-Mirpur route in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area around 1:00pm. The agitated people have given an ultimatum for tough programme for today (Sunday) to trace the missing intern Shamim.Earlier, a group of unknown people identifying them as detectives picked up Tapu in a microbus from in front of the hospital around 2:00pm on Friday. Mohammad Murtaza, an intern of the hospital, said that the intern doctors took to the streets in front of their hospital at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and put barricade around 1:00pm demanding Tapu’s tracing.The blockade disrupted vehicular movement on Mirpur Road in the city for an hour in the afternoon.Besides, outdoor health services were seriously hampered due to their work abstention from 7:00am. However, the agitating doctors withdrew their road blockade programme around 2:00 pm following the assurance of the hospital authorities, said Prof Dr Uttam Kumar Barua of the hospital.Intern Mousumi announced that they will go on an indefinite work abstention from Sunday morning until Tapu is rescued.When contacted, G G Biswas, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, told The New Nation, “We are trying to trace him after filing of a General Diary in this connection.”He rejected the allegation of picking-up by the law enforcers.The police official said that the situation came under control following interfere of the law enforcers around 2:15pm.Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to face any untoward situation, the OC said.
