Taking the corpse of publisher son Faisal Arefin Dipan, Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque has again said only trying attacks and killings will bring no solution to the crisis; it needs to be tackled politically, ideologically.
The body of ‘Jagriti Prokashony’ owner and publisher was handed over to the family before midday after autopsy and formalities on Sunday morning.
The Dhaka University’s Bangla Department teacher Professor Haque, Dipan’s father-in-law Dr Jalalur Rahman and friend Azizul Islam Wali were present there. Dipan was found murdered in his office at Shahbagh’s Aziz Supermarket-a hub of writers and publishers in Dhaka around 5:30pm on Saturday.
Hours earlier, Publisher Ahmedur Rashid Chowdhury Tutul of ‘Suddhaswar’ and two others-a writer and a blogger-were hacked by unknown assailants at his office in the capital’s Lalmatia.
Tutul and Dipan, both were close to slain writer-blogger Avijit Roy, and had published his titles.
A secular writer and bioengineer by profession, Roy was murdered on the Dhaka University campus in February this year.
Dipan’s father said on Saturday those who attacked the Suddhaswar office were behind the murder of his son.
“I am not interested in justice. Prison or hangings will not help,” he said.
“I appeal to those in power upholding the banner of secular politics and those who want a religious state to come back to their senses,” Prof Haque said. Dipan was his only son.
Haque said on Sunday he was not being emotional. “What I said (on Saturday) was from practical considerations. The nation needs to look beyond conflicts and progress,” he said.
He pitched for ‘ideological and political solutions’ to the murder of bloggers. “Merely seeking a legal solution is not good enough.”
The professor said he will file a case of murder because he was a law-abiding citizen. “But I don’t depend on that very much.”
