Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Monday said utilizing the skills of the members of Parliament the challenges of information technology (IT), climate change and world trade could be tackled in the developing countries.
She said this on Monday while speaking at the inaugural session of the “International Trade Workshop for Parliament Members-2017” at Pan Pacific Hotel in Singapore.
According to a release received here on Monday, Rajaratnam School of International Studies-WTO Secretariat (RSIS-WTO) organized the workshop.
Terming the trade as the driving force of the economy, the Speaker said that the countries which have limited resources, they must ensure balanced development by making skilled human resources as well as proper use of natural resources.
Dr Shirin, also Executive Committee Chairperson of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), stressed the need for regional cooperation to increase inter-ties and sustainable development through exchange of mutual technology and experiences.
At the end of the first day of the workshop, Speaker Shirin discussed bilateral issues including mutual interest with Speaker of Singapore Parliament, Mdm Halimah Yacob.
During the meeting, they discussed women empowerment, women education, gender equality, socio-economic development of women, violence against women prevention, parliamentary customs and practice and women’s participation in parliamentary programmes.
Dr Shirin said Bangladesh has intensive and friendly relations with Singapore and there are many Bangladeshi workers in Singapore, who are development partners of Singapore. She hoped that the relationship between the two countries will be strengthened further in future by increasing bilateral trade.
During the meeting, the Speaker of Singapore praised Bangladesh government for women empowerment and the country’s overall progress. She said the steps taken by Bangladesh government to involve women in the important works of the state are impeccable.’
