Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique on Friday said the 6-point charter of demand placed by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman brought independence of Bangladesh and its people.
“The farsightedness, inner vision and political brilliance of Bangabandhu were so sharp that he could proclaim independence of Bangladesh by transforming the 6-point charter of demand (for autonomy of the then East Pakistan) into a one-point demand,” he said.
Prof Siddique said this while speaking at a discussion at the National Press Club.
Bangabandhu Parishad organised the discussion marking the historic 6-point Day with its General Secretary and Awami League Advisory Council member Dr SA Malek in the chair.
Vice-Chancellor of Rajshahi University Prof Dr Mizan Uddin, Vice-Chancellor of National Poet Kazi Nazrul University in Mymensingh, Dr Mohitul Alam, Chairman of Jagannath University Political Science Department Dr Arun Kumar Goswami, President of the National Press Club Md Shafiqur Rahman, former Dean of DU Pharmacy Faculty Prof ABM Faruque, Chairman of Jagannath University Micro-biology Department Dr Zakaria Miah, another teacher of Jagannath University Prof Dr Arshaful Islam, a teacher of Noakhali Science and Technology University Prof Dr Newaz Mohammad Bahadur, assistant professor of DU English Department Prof Neelima Akhter and political analyst Rashek Rahman spoke at the discussion, among others.
Dr SA Malek said, “The 6-point demand was the turning point for emancipation of Bangalees. Bangabandhu placed the 6-point demand after thorough thought with diplomatic point of view taking into consideration the demands, sorrows and pains of the people of Bangla as well as freeing his people from all sorts of economic disparity once and for all. The demands containing the 6-point were very logical and acceptable. If the demands had been implemented, full autonomy for the people of the eastern part of (Pakistan) Bangla could be achieved and equality in the field of economy would be established.”
Shafiqur Rahman said, “The historic 6-point charter of demand of Bangabandhu was the guideline of independence of Bangalees. Bangabandhu prepared the 6-point demand keeping similarity with our six seasons of the year.”
Rashek Rahman said, “Removal of all sorts of disparity, establishment of equality and proper justice in all fields and the struggle, emancipation and political rights of the Bangalee nation were incorporated in the 6-point demand of Bangabandhu.”
