At least six gold bars weighing 700 gram worth around Tk 35 lakh were found in the rectum of a passenger of Flydubai Airlines in the city on Friday morning.
A city hospital’s X-ray report confirmed that 38-year old Kazi Rafiqul Islam was carrying the gold bars inside his rectum.
Detective Branch of Customs Department arrested Rafiqul Islam from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Thursday night, Customs Department Joint Commissioner SM Sohel Rahman told the New Nation on Friday.
“This is the first time of a strange smuggling effort in the country,” the Customs official said.
The Joint Commissioner said that Rafiqul returned from Dubai at night when he was crossing the immigration.
Sohel said, “The passenger admitted to the customs officials that he had been carrying six gold bars. But no gold bar was found in his possession even after searching his body and luggage. At one stage, detectives took a decision to examine his body with the ‘X-Ray’ to ensure the presence of the gold bars.”
“Police took him to Uttara Medical College and Hospital on Friday morning where X-ray reports confirmed the presence of gold inside rectum,” the Customs official said.
“The doctors there suggested using glycerin suppositories to bring out the gold bars packed in plastic and black tape. The instruction was duly followed, he said.
Sohel said, “The gold bars were anally inserted into his body in Dubai. Rafiqul is a regular mule of the gold smuggling syndicate.” Customs official will interrogate him further to find out who else is involved with gold smuggling.
A case was filed with Airport police in this regard.
