Thousands pay last respect: Sir Fazle Hasan Abed laid to rest

Brac founder and Chair Emeritus Sir Fazle Hasan Abed was laid to eternal rest on the place of his late wife Ayesha Hasan Abed at Banani graveyard on Sunday afternoon.
His first namaz-e-janaza was held near Brac Centre Inn in Mohakhali in the morning and a second janaza was held at the Army Stadium around 12:40pm.
Earlier, his body was taken to the stadium from Apollo Hospitals Dhaka around 10:30am where people from all strata of life paid their last respects to him.
Fazle Hasan Abed’s four family members – his daughter Tamara Hasan Abed, son-in-law Asif Saleh, son Shameran Abed and Shameran’s wife, members of Brac family and other organizations affiliated with Brac ,were also present.
At the outset, respects were paid to him on behalf of Bangladesh president Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Mayor Atiqul Islam paid respects on behalf of the President while Prime Minister’s Deputy Military Secretary Colonel Md. Saifullah paid respects on behalf of her.
 
Following them, Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Mia and Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda paid their respects to the Brac founder.
Later, Awami League General Secretary and also Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader along with Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, Bahauddin Nasim and other central leaders also paid their respects.
US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl R Miller, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam, among others, also paid tributes to Sir Abed.
All the people present there, including leaders and activists of various political, social, and cultural organizations, waited in long queues to pay him their last tributes, our correspondent reported. The queues extended towards the main gate of the Army Stadium,
On Friday, Brac founder and Chair Emeritus Sir Fazle Hasan Abed passed away at the Apollo Hospitals in Dhaka at 8:28pm, at the age of 83.
Sir Abed founded BRAC in 1972 with a small relief and rehabilitation project in northeastern Bangladesh. Over the years, the organisation grew to be one of the largest non-government organisations in the world.
He retired from his role as the chairperson of the governing body of BRAC Bangladesh and BRAC International and transitioned to the role of chair emeritus.
He was born in Baniachang of Habiganj on 27 April in 1936. Sir Abed studied accounting in London and was working as a senior corporate executive in Pakistan Shell Oil company in 1970 when a devastating cyclone and the liberation war changed his life.
