UNB, Dhaka :
A court here on Saturday sent sub-inspector Jahidur Rahman Khan of Mipur Model Police Station to jail in a case filed in connection with the custodial death of a young trader.
Metropolitan Magistrate Nuru Miah passed the order after SI Jahid refused to confess to his involvement in the death of Mahbubur Rahman Sujan, who used to deal in garment scraps in police custody.
Detective Branch of police Inspector Nibaron Chandra Barman produced the police officer before the court in the morning on completion of his two-day remand with a prayer to record his confessional statement.
Following the petition, the magistrate gave Jahid some time to be ready to give the statement.
However, the police officer declined to confess his part in the custodial death when the magistrate called him to give his statement after two hours. Later, the court sent him to jail.
Jahid was placed on a two-day fresh remand on Thursday when police source
Nasim Sheikh gave a confessional statement before the magistrate in connection with the custodial death.
In his statement, Nasim said a team of police along with him picked Sujan up from his house in the early hours on July 13. They also arrested his wife Mamtaz Sultana Lucy and their son Rabbi as Sujan refused to met their demand for extortion.
The garment scrap trader was tortured at his house, in the police vehicle on the way to the police station and also at the police station, said the informer.
As Sujan fell sick due to torture, he was admitted to a local clinic and then shifted to Suhrawardy Hospital where doctors declared him dead in the morning of July 13.
As family members of the victim alleged that Sujan was tortured to death, SI Jahid was closed to Rajarbagh Police Lines and later arrested.
