Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Thursday alerted the drivers not to drive recklessly in the winter in view of foggy weather, which makes driving risky.
“Road accidents occur mostly in foggy weather. So, drivers must control the speed of vehicles to avoid casualties,” he said.
The Minister said this at a discussion, marking the 24th anniversary of “Nirapad Sarak Chai” (We Demand Safe Road), an organization working for road safety, at the VIP Lounge of the Jatiya Press Club.
Accident Research Institute Director Professor Moazzem Hossain, ‘Nirapad Sarak Chai Chairman Ilias Kanchan and Film Actor Mizu Ahmed addressed the function while Nirapad Sarak Chai Vice-Chairman Syed Ehsanul Haque Kamal presided over it.
Obaidul Quader also sought cooperation from all to stop road accident.
“In our country, both drivers and pedestrians have lack of consciousness. Drivers are reckless on the one hand, while pedestrians are jaywalkers on the other hand. So, both should be conscious to get rid of road accident,” he said.
The Minister said, though the country’s infrastructure is improving, the people’s mindset is not changing.
“If people become aware, road accidents would be reduced. Lack of awareness is responsible for road accidents,” he said. Giving direction to Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to introduce apps-based taxicab service, the Cabinet Minister said, the government has been working tirelessly to ease the communication system.
He gave details of government’s initiatives including introducing metro-rail and constructing elevated expressway as measurers to reduce traffic jams.
