At least 15 people, including three cop members, were injured in a clash between two rival groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at Dinajpur Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday over formation of two separate committees of the student body.
The college authorities in view of it have imposed ban on all political activities, including meeting, rally and procession, on the campus for the next three months.weapons, sticks and iron made pipes from the college premises, police and campus sources said. The clash began at about 10:30am as a sequel to tension between the supporters of district BCL Convenor Parvez Chowdhury and Joint Convenors Saikat Pal and Sadekur Rahman Biplob, leaving 12 BCL men and three police men injured. Muzahid, President of a committee, and BCL activists Rashedul Islam and Ibrahim Khalil were among the injured. Campus sources said that on November 13, a 56-member BCL committee was formed with Mozahidur Hasan and Koushik Dev as President and General Secretary respectively. The committee was approved by Parvez Chowdhury, campus sources said.
Terming the committee illegal, Saikat and Biplob formed a separate 61-member committee with Ashfaqur Rahman Tushar and Ashfikar Shams as President and General Secretary respectively.
On information, a police team led by Assistant Police Super (ASP) Sushanto Sarkar rushed in and tried to pacify the feuding groups. But the supporters of Muzahid vandalized Dr Yusuf Ali Hall and threw brickbats at the law enforcers. Police also charged batons to disperse the unruly BCL men. Police arrested Muzahid, Rashedul Islam and Ibrahim Khalil. They were receiving treatment under police custody.
College Principal Dr Kamrul Ahsan said that a seven-member probe body headed by Professor Bulonda Akhter Tagar has been formed with request to submit its report within a week.
