Shop owners in Rajshahi city opened their shops on Tuesday morning defying the government-imposed lockdown.
While visiting to the RDA Market, this correspondent saw many traders and their employees opening their shops at the market in the heart of the city, on the second day of the seven-day lockdown.
However, the presence of shoppers in the area was low and the shops outside the market were closed.
Traders said they were keeping their shops open while maintaining the highest level of hygiene and would not attend to any shoppers without a mask.
Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Abu Aslam said there were clear instructions to keep all shops closed. “Action will be taken against errant shopkeepers if seen otherwise.”
Boalia police station Officer-in-charge (OC) Nibaran Chandravarman said: “I am at the New Market now. Later, I will visit the RDA market. Although there are some shops open, there aren’t any customers. We are working to keep all shops closed.”
On Monday, traders blocked Shaheb Bazar Road, demanding that the government allow them to open shops and run their businesses during the restrictions. The day before, the traders held a press conference demanding to open the shop in compliance with the hygiene rules.
