Sources said CPA had received formal administrative approval for constructing a new container terminal at Patenga in Chittagong in July last as June 13, 2017 the Ministry of Shipping gave the administrative approval to the project. The cost for the new terminal has been estimated at Tk 1,868 crore. The money will be spent from CPA’s own found. The construction work of the container terminal is scheduled to be completed by 2019.
The CPA expects that ship congestion at the port will be reduced once the container terminal construction will be completed. Currently, a ship has to wait seven to ten days at the outer-anchorage of Chittagong port for berthing and for everyday a ship has to count $8,000 to $12,000 as demurrage for waiting at the outer-anchorage, which has negative economic impacts on import of goods.
