Lighterage vessels' strike: Shipping Minister in Ctg to negotiate workers’ demands

Shipping Minister Md. Shahjahan Khan MP has arrived the port city yesterday morning to resolve the issues beyond the countrywide marine transport workers strike for indefinite period.
 Sources said the marine transport workers suspended loading, unloading operations at all inland , sea ports and outer berths to press home their demands from Saturday morning. Second day of the strike as called by Liter vessels and water transport workers union of Chittagong passed off without any further development of their demands.
 Water transport workers enforced the strike following the robbery in a lighterage vessel MV Karnapuli at Batirkhal area of Luxmipur on Friday night.
Moreover, s even workers, crews of the vessel remained since Friday .
 Marine transport workers of Chittagong inland and sea port declared indefinite strike in Chittagong as elsewhere in the country protesting the extortions in river routes, piracy and to ensure the life of the marine workers from Saturday morning. The workers decline to undergo loading, unloading in inland vessels and lighter vessels from yesterday protesting the piracy in a inland vessel in Lakmipur area at about 4 am on Friday.
In the dacoity, the pirates abducted 7 workers , sailors from MV Karnaphuli when it reached in Batir khal of Luxmipur and still missing till wrting this report. After circulating the news of a bduction of the workers of the vessel, the workers in Chittagong became agitated and declared indefinite strike, sources said. Joint Secretary of Bangladesh Marine Transport workers Federation ,Chittagong Khorshed Alam told this correspondent that they enforced indefinite strike protesting the continuous extortions, piracy in the inland vessels, physical torture to sailors , they called indefinite strike . He said in the meantime, the Federation submitted memorandum earlier to the Prime Minister in this connection but no remedy yet to be sighted and on Saturday early morning a dacoity occurred in a inland vessel in Laxmipur area . He further said until the security of the workers are ensured, their strike will continue till further orders.
Shipping Minister will hold meeting with the leaders of the water transport unions of Chittagong port and IWTA inland port of Ctg at Port auditorium at 4 pm to end the stalemate in cargo loading,unloading and transportation of consignment through literage vessels.
While contacted President of Liter Vessels Workers union Md. Isha Miah told that until their demands are fulfilled , the strike will continue and if the minister can ensure our life security then we will withdraw the strike.
