An active member of Islami Chhatra Shibir was killed in a reported encounter with police in the city’s Mirpur Beri Bandh area on Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Emadullah, activist of the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Masudur Rahman said Mirpur thana police had arrested Emadul and 11 others conducting a drive in different places of Mirpur on Saturday.
They launched a drive with Emadul to arrest his cohorts in the area at about 11:45 pm.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Emadul’s associates attacked the policemen, triggering a fierce clash.
Several rounds of gunshot were traded between the law enforcers and them.
Emadul was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while his aides managed to flee.
Later, Rupnagar thana police recovered the body early Sunday.
