Shariful Islam Alias Khalid, a suspected member of banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) confessed his involvement in RU professor Rezaul murder in an interrogation of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit.
On April 2016, Shariful escaped to India after Rezaul Karim’s assassination. Since then, he was remained traceless for a long. On last January 25 in this year, members of elite force arrested the militant from Nachole upazila of northern Chapainawabganj district, RAB sources said.
Wishing anonymity several sources of police said, in an interrogation, militant Shariful said that they received a target list at the end of year 2015. In the list, foreigners, shiites, qadianis and atheists were asked to kill. Militant Tamim decided to kill professor Rezaul. He asked other militants to take final preparations to kill professor Rezaul. Following this, in 2016, militants killed Rezaul brutally.
The trial of professor Rezaul’s murder case is continuing in the high court. The lower court announced a verdict to death sentence to Muskowyat Hasan Alias Abdullah Alias Shakib and Shariful Islam, residents of Shibganj upazila in Bogra district respectively. Besides, three militant activists had got to life-term imprisonment in this connection. They are Rohomot Ullah, a resident of Miyapara of Nilphamari district, Abdus Sattar and his son Ripon Ali, residents of Narikelbariya area in Rajshahi city.
On the other hand, another three militant activists who were involved in Rezaul murder killed in a gun fight with law enforcing agency. The deceased militants are Khairul Islam Payel Alias Badhon, Nazrul Islam Alias Baik Hasan and Tareq Hasan Alias Osman Rooy. Both they are enlisted criminals.
Noted, on April 23 in 2016, the militants hacked to death professor Rezaul with a sharp weapon from 50 yards of his residence in Shalbagan area in the city while he was going to the university.
