The 33-yerd old Shariful Islam, who embezzled millions of Taka from the accounts of customers of five private banks, has been held on charge of cloning credit cards of Brac Bank, City Bank, EBL, UCBL and Bank Asia by using a digital watch in ATM booths and different super shops.
Police seized a laptop, 1500 cloned ATM cards, digital wristwatch, 14 passports, two mini card reader devices, wig, card-manufacturing machines and eight mobile phones from his possession, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Special Police Superintendent Molla Nazrul Islam said at a press briefing on Wednesday.
Shariful worked as a salesman at supershop Swapno’s Banani branch and stole the credit card information of the customers using a digital wristwatch when they used their cards to pay the bills. He then cloned the cards and withdrew money from ATM booths, the SSP said.
The CID started the investigation in the second week of March and tracked down
a gang led by Shariful, he said. Shariful, son of Yazuddin Biswas of Gangni upazila of Meherpur, went to Russia for higher degrees back in 2007. In three years, not only did he earned an engineering degree, but also learnt the trick to clone the cards from his Russian friends to steal money from banks, the police official said.
Shariful was convicted in two similar cases of forgery in 2013 and served 18 months in jail.
“He told police during primary interrogation that one hundred more criminals were doing this kind of forgery in the country,” revealed Sharmin Jahan, senior Assistant Superintendent (Legal and Media Cell) of CID.
“The banks cannot stop them unless they change their security system,” Sharmin said.
Sharif using his special wristwatch and a little bit of cleverness, clone of the ATM cards of the customers and make a copy for himself, which he used to draw money from the ATM booths, she added.
CID says, Sharif uses a Toyota Allion for his personal use and his bank balance was in the sum of crores, according to her.
To dodge the identity, he used black goggles while stealing information from ATM booths and shops, the police official said. There are at least a 100 people like him (Sharif) operating in Dhaka city, she added.
