A dispute over distribution of drug money led to the killing of Shakil Ahmed, a young Executive of an Advertising Agency in the capital’s Gulshan area.
Police arrested a youth identified as Arafat on Tuesday night from a house at Niketan, said Abu Bakar Siddique, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gulshan Police Station after citing an initial interrogation.
Arafat confessed to his involvement in Shakil’s murder, the police official said.
They used to consume the banned yaba drug. Arafat tied Shakil with a rope in his sleep and strangled him, the OC said.
He said that Shakil was in a deal with Arafat to pay for the yaba pills. Arafat killed him as he did not pay the money.
However, Arafat will be shown arrested in a case filed by Shakil’s father, he said further.
The murder came to light after a caller demanded ransom from Shakil’s father Noor-e-Nabi, a man from Feni but a resident of Dhaka, saying his son was abducted. The caller demanded Tk 200,000 and later agreed to release him for Tk 100,000 in ransom.
Shakil’s father went to Gulshan Police Station immediately after receiving the call.
Noor-e-Nabi told the police that the “kidnappers” asked him to pay the money near Shakil’s office.
As none came even hours after the payment spot was fixed, police broke down the door of the office and found Shakil dead inside.
Police recovered the body of 18-year old Shakil from his office, named Tinsel Town on Road No. 3 in the area on Tuesday evening. There were several sharp weapon wounds on his throat and hands.
