Shahid placed on 5-day remand

Court Correspondent :A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed former Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) ward commissioner Saidur Rahman Shahid known as Shahid Commissioner on a five-day remand.Magistrate of Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court MA Salam passed the order after hearing.Earlier, Gandaria Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Atiqur Rahman prayed for a ten-day remand to interrogate Shahid Commissioner. On the other hand, defence lawyer moved a petition seeking bail of the accused.The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the former DCC commissioner, raiding his Gandaria house in the capital on Tuesday dawn. They allegedly recovered three foreign pistols, three magazines and 62 rounds of bullets from Shahid’s possession. Shahid contested 10th parliament election on January 5. He was convicted several times for crimes including murder.RAB reportedly informed that Shahid was devising anarchy with the help of his accomplices. But they managed to escape from the spot of his arrest.On May 29, 2003, Shahid was sentenced to death for killing Advocate Habibur Rahman Mandal at |Banogram in the old town of Dhaka, on August 20, 2000.He was also accused of killing ward commissioner Shahadat Hossain Sikder on September 29, 2003 and Jubadal leader Suja on May 4, 1999. He is now facing at least 18 cases, including 11for murder.
