‘Shahid Commissioner’ granted bail

A Dhaka court yesterday (Monday) granted bail to Md Saidur Rahman, alias Shahid Commissioner, in an arms case filed against him with Gandaria Police Station.
Judge Ruhul Amin of the Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka passed the order on Monday afternoon after hearing. Saidur Rahman was a former Ward Commissioner of Ward No. 38 in the city.
On February 3 last year, Rapid Action Battalion-10 (RAB-10) personnel arrested Shahid Commissioner from his Gandaria residence with three pistols and 62 rounds of bullet.
 Later, the arms case was lodged against him with Gandaria Police Station.
He vied in the 10th general election of the country as an independent candidate from Dhaka-6 Constituency and lost to Jatiya Party leader Kazi Firoj Rashid.
Shahid was sentenced to death on May 29 in 2003 on charge of killing advocate Habibur Rahman Mandal at Chandra Mohan Basak Lane at Banogram of old Dhaka on August 20, 2000.
Shahid is also an accused in the case filed for killing City’s Ward No 90’s Commissioner Shahadat Hossain Sikder on September 29, 2003. Besides, he is also an accused in Juba Dal leader Sujan murder case. The Juba Dal leader was killed in Sutrapur of the capital on May 4, 1999.
