About 120-metre stretch of Sirajganj town protection embankment crossdam collapsed on Sunday morning after illegal extraction of sand.
The Water Development Board authorities’ dumped sands filled geo-bags to resist erosion of the embankment.
Over telephone, Deputy Assistant Engineer of Water Development Board Ranjit Kumar Sarkar told The New Nation on Saturday night that illegal sand collectors near the embankment caused the risky situation.
They said that illegal sand collection from the river bed along with whirlpool in river Jamuna caused the erosion.
The crossbar was constructed by China Harbour Engineering Company.
Sirajganj sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sarkar Mohammad Raihan said that they had set up a Mobile Court to punish illegal sand collectors after getting letter from water development board.
