Though there is no load-shedding in most of the parts of Dhaka city, the people of the district and Upazila headquarters and villages experience severe load-shedding.
Four to six times load-shedding occur at least thrice at night, said one Abu Nayem, who returned from Pirganj of Rangpur recently.
The suffering of the residents of the rural people increase when it rains. Sometimes very low voltage damage electric appliances, said a local journalist from Mirzapur in Tangail.
Though Power Development Board (PDB) showed in website on Wednesday that the demand of electricity in the country is 7486MW and load shedding is zero. Selim Uddin, resident of Bhuyapur Upazila, told the reporter in cell phone that they faced three times load shedding on Wednesday till 8pm.
People who visit villages during Ramazan to meet their relatives express similar experience. And now they can feel the pinch of load-shedding in the rural areas.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid claimed of no load shedding because of ample generation of electricity.
People of some rural areas might suffer little load shedding as the power distribution
lines in all the village areas are not modern, the minister said. “We are compelled to force load-shedding due to shortage of distribution lines,” Rabiul Alam, Deputy General Manager of Rural Electrification Board (REB) of Tangail said.
According to PDB sources, power production capacity is 10,561 megawatts (MW) but actual production is 7486MW. The government estimate of maximum demand is 7,500MW but consumer demand is 10,000MW to 12,000 MW. So loadshedding will be to the extent of 2500MW to 5000 MW. Although established capacity is10,561 MW, derated capacity is 9,947MW. Production is less by 900MW due to gas shortage. About 1,200MW is under process of retirement.
