UNB, Dhaka :
IndustriALL Bangladesh Council (IBC), a workers’ right body, on Saturday sought Tk 16,000 as the minimum wage for garment workers.
In a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club, IBC secretary general Salauddin Swapan came up with the demand in a written statement. He alleged that though the wage board to review wages of apparel workers
was formed on January 29, but no representatives from workers’ organisations were included in the board. Rather owner and government-backed representatives were included in the board, he added.
“Even though workers hoped that the board would announce a rational salary structure for RMG workers but its working slow in making recommendations for minimum rates of wages as the board held only two meetings in past six months since its formation”, he said. The minimum wage of garment workers must be set at Tk 16,000 to elevate Bangladesh into a middle-income, industrialized country, he added.
They would also form a human-chain at 11 am on August 4 to press home their demand in front of the Jatiya Press Club. IBC’s central leaders Amirul Haque Amin, Nazma Aktar, Md Kutub Uddin Ahmed, Md Kamrul Hasan, Md Kobirul Hasan, Md Mofidul Islam were also present at the press conference.
