Staff Reporter :
The government has taken steps to set up ‘sensor measures’ on the borders to check drug smuggling in and out of the country, said Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal..
He said this while addressing a function organised by Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city on Tuesday marking the ‘International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’.
The law enforcing agencies, mainly Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), will get earlier information about the presence of any person near the bordering areas based on the sensors, he said.
The Home Minister also mentioned that a process is underway to update the list of the patrons of drug dealers.
“Intelligence agencies are preparing a list of those involved in patronising drug traders and we’ll take action against them. No one will be allowed to resort to drug trading. Those involved in drug peddling will be thrown into jail,” he said.
Asaduzzaman urged the teachers, imams, singers and parents to stand against drug abuse in the country.
He said the Department of Narcotics Control will be recast soon to bring dynamism into its activities.
Asaduzzaman also hinted that the government will introduce a new provision in the existing law keeping harsher punishment for Yaba possession.
Chaired by DNC Director General Md Jamal Uddin Ahmed, the programme was addressed, among others, by member of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Ministry Faridul Alam, MP, Security Services Division Secretary Farid Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury and Director General of Fire Service and Civil Defence Brigadier General Ali Ahmed.
