Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) organized a seminar titled Bangladesh: The Next Level of Development” on Wednesday by the Department of Economics under Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Bijoy Auditorium on its campus. The main purpose of the seminar was to impart the knowledge on the key challenges and opportunities Bangladesh is likely to face once it moves from a least developed to a lower middle-income nation. They seminar was arranged also to give an insight on the obstacles that need to be overcome and the strategies and policies that needs to be adopted to reach the next goal of upper middle-income status by 2021.
In the seminar, Pro-VC Prof M Abul Kashem Mozumder, PhD graced the occasion as the chief guest while Dr Monzur Hossain, Senior Research Fellow, Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies was present as the keynote speaker. Acting Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Science and Chairman, Department of Economics Group Captain Saiful Islam, Engg chaired the seminar while Dr Kazi Maruful Islam, Professor, Department of Development Studies, University of Dhaka was present as the Discussant.
The speakers emphasized on increasing investment of private sectors, financing from external sources and enhance efficiency in collecting taxes. They also suggested that not to rely on the garments sectors alone rather Bangladesh should diversify its export in leather, pharmaceuticals, jute, shipbuilding and diversification in garments products.
BUP High Officials, Officers, Teachers and Students were also present in the seminar.
