Indian bi-cycles flood Jhenaidah markets: Selling of local products almost stopped

Each and every markets in Jhenaidah and surrounding district are now flooded with Indian bi-cycles for last couple of years. Both imported and smuggled ones are brought in to the country through the bordering areas in Moheshpur in Jhenaidah, Chowgachha in Jesssore, Jibannagar in Chuadanga and some other borders.
The trend has been decreasing the manufacturing of bi-cycles in the country, said the businessmen involved with the bi-cycle trade.
In the other hand the border guards have been seizing huge bi-cycles form the frontiers in Jhenaidah, Jessore and Chuiadanga, said the Border Guard Bangaldesh sources in Jhenaidah.
The sources said, the bi-cyccles are entering through Khosalpur, Shyamkur and some points of Moheshpur in Jhenaidah. But the BGB men are active to arrest the smsugglers and nab them with contra banned items everyday.
Some bi-cycle vendors in Jhenaidah Sadara abnd Sailkupa when asked said, most of the bi cycles which they have been selling are Indian. Some of the same are imported from the neighboring country, while a huge number are smuggled from the same country. Usually Tata, Hero, Max, BSA , Hercules, Captain and other company brands are selling. A piece of the bike is sold at Taka six thousand to eleven thousand.
In the other hand the Bangladeshi brands like Meghna Phoenix and some other brands selling has fallen down as the demand of the items was also in the markets. New technology has been adopting with the Indian bi-cycles attracting the Bangladeshi people, especially, the young generation. The trend will affect the local bi-cycle manufacturing compaanies, said another vendor in Jhenaidah.
Deputy Commissioner of Jhenaidah Mahbub Alam Talukder when contacted said, there are huge bordering area with neighboring India from where huge bi-cycles are brought through valid documents as well as in illegal ways. The BGB in the bordering areas are ver active to check the smuggling. They border guards show zero tolerance to the smugglers in the bordering area, the deputy commissioner said.
