Seismic surveys for the under-construction and existing flyovers have to be conducted to know about their earthquake resistance capacity, said experts at a meeting in Chittagong on Thursday.
The meeting of the sub-committee-1 of the standing committee on planning ministry was held with the officials of Chittagong Development Authority in CDA’s conference room.
At the meeting, the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) former vice chancellor Prof Jahangir Alam said the resistance capacity of the flyovers had to be examined as the country was experiencing earthquake “frequently”.
Cuet teacher Abdur Rahman said, “It seems to us that the quality of the construction work of Muradpur flyover has been improved.” But its quake resistance has to be reexamined, he said.
CDA Chairman Abdus Salam, however, told the meeting that the newly built flyovers were able to tolerate earthquake measuring up to 8 on the Richter scale.
The sub-committee, which is entrusted with finding out flaws in flyover construction countrywide, will also look into corruption, if any, in the projects, said the sub-committee member lawmaker Shamsul Haque Chowdury.
They will submit a report to the planning ministry after visiting the sites and talking to experts, he added.
The sub-committee convener Md Tazul Islam was present on the occasion.
After the meeting, they visited the Lalkhan Bazar, Kadamtali and Bahaddarhat flyovers in the port city.
