UNB, Rangamati :Local administration on Saturday imposed section 144 in the district town for an indefinite period prohibiting mass gathering following a clash between Pahari Chhatra Parishad (PCP) and ruling party activists at Hapiar crossing in the district town.At least 15 people were injured in a clash between the supporters of Parbatya Chhatragram Janasanghati Samity (PCJSS-Santu Larma)-backed Pahari Chhatra Parishad (PCP) and the ruling party men over the inauguration of the academic activities of Rangamati Medical College on Saturday morning, witnesses said.Earlier, Pahari Chhatra Parishad called a blockade programme protesting the inauguration of Rangamati Medical College. PCJSS demanded implementation of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) peace accord before starting the activities of the medical college.When some Jubo League and Chhatra League activists brought out a procession from Hapiar Mor in the town for going to the medical college premises some PCP activists chased them, triggering a clash around 9 am.The PCP men also vandalised some business establishments, including Islami and Rupali bank branches in the area, during the clash that left 15 people, including Kotwali thana officer-in-charge and some local journalists.Police rushed in and brought the situation under control by firing 20 rounds of bullet and teargas shells.The clashes then spilled onto the entire district town and supporters of several pro-government organisations got involved in the melee.Later, the local administration imposed section 144 in the area apprehending further trouble.Police, Rab and army personnel have deployed at some important points of the district to maintain law and order.
