Staff Reporter :
The government has decided to dissolve the search committee panel which was formed earlier to find candidates for two vacant posts of Deputy Governors for Bangladesh Bank (BB).
The decision was taken in a high-level meeting at the office of the Finance Division on Tuesday with Finance Minister AMA Muhith in the chair.
State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan, Governor of Bangladesh Bank Fazle Kabir and Senior Principal Secretary at Prime Minister’s Office Abul Kalam Azad attended the meeting.
“The panel has recommended three candidates for the post of BB Deputy Governors. Of them, two are facing corruption allegations by the Anti-Corruption Commission. This might be irked the government leading it to dissolve the committee,” a senior Finance Division Official told The New Nation on Tuesday, requesting not to be named.
Another Finance Ministry Official said that the committee might have lost trust of the government as it recommended alleged corrupt persons for the posts of Deputy Governors.
He said the government will now look for a new committee to complete the task.
Three executive directors of BB – Muniruzzaman, Abdul Rahim and Ahmed Jamal – have been recommended for two deputy governor posts by the search committee. But the anti-graft body is now investigating allegations of corruption against Muniruzzaman and Abdul Rahim.
When asked, Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmed, head of the committee, told The New Nation yesterday that the committee knew that there were allegations of corruption against two people recommended but it wanted they would be appointed only after clearance from intelligence agencies.
He stressed that as question has been raised over integrity of the recommended officers, appointment of them in the deputy governor posts will not be appropriate.
