The BNP on Friday said that the search committee formed to reconstitute the next Election Commission would not be able to make a fair EC.
Rather, the party alleged that the search body had been filled with those who are loyal to the ruling Awami League family.
“Filled by those loyal to Awami League family, there is no option to consider this search committee non-partisan and neutral,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir while addressing a press briefing to uphold its formal reaction on the committee in the party’s Naya Palatan office.
The BNP leader said that the head of the six member body Justice Mahmud Hossain was the chief of the former search committee. That committee formed Kazi Rakib Uddin Ahmed-led EC which was incompetent, spineless and controversial.
“To make the former chief, head of new committee means the government want to form another subservient commission,” he said.
Fakhrul said that another member of the search committee, a justice of High Court division of the Supreme Court, was a central leader of Chhatra League.
Also mentioning the PSC Chairman Mohammad Sadik, the BNP leader said, “He was the secretary of EC secretariat during the January 5 polls. He has been awarded for legalising that controversial election.”
Mirza Fakhrul said, Shirin Akhter, the member of the committee was the Awami League nominated teachers’ leader in Chittagong University. She is also a member of Cox’s Bazar district unit Mahila Awami League.
Another member of the committee is Comptroller and Auditor General Masud Ahmed, Fakhrul said, adding: As a government official, he would not be able to do anything without the directions of the political government.
The BNP secretary general urged the people to get united for pressing the government to hold a neutral general election.
“It will not be possible for this search body to constitute a neutral Election Commission. It is a big letdown for the people by forming such a search committee,” he said.
Fakhrul also said, “Our chairperson’s proposal on formation of the search committee has been totally ignored.”
Replying a question, Mirza Fakhrul said his party neither accept nor refuse the committee. “After the formation of EC, BNP will consider whether to accept or refuse the commission,” he said.
