Scrap Rampal plant project: Khaleda

UNB, Dhaka :
Terming the proposed Rampal coal-fired power plant project ‘anti-people, illogical’ and ‘unprofitable’, BNP
chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday urged the government to take steps for scraping it.
“If the project is implemented our beloved motherland will no longer remain as a worth living place…no citizen of the country will accept it… so, I strongly demand the government annul this imprudent, illogical and unprofitable power plant as it’ll certainly push the Sundarbans towards destruction ,” she told a press conference at her Gulshan office. Urging people to resist this move, Khaleda said, “When the whole world is concerned about the impacts of climate change, it’s the duty of all of us to resist the move. I, on behalf of the 20-party alliance, call upon the country’s people to be vocal against it.”
There are many alternative ways for producing power and there’re many alternative places for doing so, she said adding that, “But there’s no alternative to the Sundarbans… it can’t be destroyed.”
The BNP chief, however, did not announce any protest programme against the Rampal power plant. In her 30-minute written speech, Khaleda presented various statistics, research findings and examples to justify her observations that the Rampal power plant will destroy the world’s the largest mangrove forest, country’s environment and biodiversity and will become a losing concern.
The BNP chief neither talked about any other issue nor accepted any question from journalists.
